TWC Pilates – July Update

PILATES FOR GOLF

In our Pilates for Golf program we are not “changing your swing”, but instead improving the way your body moves during the swing to maximize your power and control of the ball.

GRAB YOUR OWN GROUP OR ONE-ON-ONE
We work with groups of 5 for 4 sessions. First class is an assessment using the TPI Fitness Assessment protocols. Then we customize the subsequent sessions with some home practice to work specifically on helping your body move so you can hit the ball longer, further and straighter.Do you get stiff and sore during or after a game? This program will help relieve that as well.

Private groups available or book one on one with our Jumpstart Program.

Sungod Physio TPI Tip of the Month – June

If you’re a right-handed golfer, do you ever notice right low back pain (left low back for left handed golfer) while playing golf? If so, you may be suffering from a swing fault called “reverse spine angle.” Reverse spine angle occurs when your upper body bends excessively backwards at the top of the back swing. This swing fault is shown to be the greatest contributor to low back pain. It puts unnecessary force on your spine and inhibits your abdominal musculature to protect your low back from the compressive loads of the swing.

Check out this link to some useful drills and consider adding these exercises to your routine to avoid reverse spine angle.

https://www.mytpi.com/improve-my-game/swing-characteristics/loss-of-posture_v2

Exercise 1: Straight leg dead bug on wall

Lay on your back and press your hands into the wall. Brace your core and bring your legs to a 90 ° angle. Straighten one leg and move it up and down without affecting your lower back position and keeping the other leg at 90 °. Move your straight leg only as high and low as you can control it. Coordinate the breath and the movement: breath in as you lower down, breath out as you move the leg up.

Exercise 2: Pallof press

Maintain a lunge position with your knee just off the ground. Hold an elastic band in your hands that is attached on the side at chest height. Keep your core/abdomen braced and press your hands straight forward in line with your chest and hold for a few seconds count. Your body must not rotate as you resist the pull of the elastic. Engage shoulder blades down and back and keep hands/elbows low.

Unsure whether you suffer from “reverse spine angle?” Come visit one of our TPI certified physiotherapist for a golf medical assessment. contact us inside the clubhouse at SUNGOD SPORTS + ORTHOPAEDIC PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINICS.

Sungod Physio TPI Tip of the Month – May

Sungod Physio TPI Tip of the Month – May 2022

Loss of Posture

There is a golf term called “loss of posture”. It doesn’t mean bad posture but rather the inability to stay in a good golf stance. Loss of posture throws off timing, balance and rhythm and often results in typical miss hits.

Check out this link to some useful drills and consider adding these exercises to your routine to avoid losing posture in your swing
https://www.mytpi.com/improve-my-game/swing-characteristics/loss-of-posture_v2

Exercise 1. Open Ups

Lying on your side with arms extended out, rotate your upper body, neck and top arm to the other side. Hold for 1-2 seconds and then return. Repeat 10-20 times. Turn over and try the other side.

Exercise 2. Thoracic rotations

Start on your hands and knees. Put one hand behind your head or neck. Rotate that arm trying to point your elbow to the ceiling, then rotate back pointing your elbow to the floor. Repeat 10-20 times and then try the other side.

Sungod Physio TPI Physio Tip of the Month

Ever wonder what three exercises you could do to improve golf performance, prevent injury and feel good at the same time? Lam Nguyen, one of our Titleist Performance Institute credentialled physiotherapists, says you have to try these three exercises for gluteal strength and control.

1. Single Leg Glute Bridge

Lie on your back with your knees bent and a ball between them.
a. Extend one leg, keeping your thighs parallel and raise your arms overhead.
b. Squeeze your buttocks together and lift your pelvis off the ground to make a straight line with your body without rotating your trunk or hips.
c. Slowly lower your body and repeat.
Your head, shoulders and feet are anchored on the ground in the lifted position.

2. Standing Clamshell

a. Standing on one leg with one foot on the wall, have a slight bend in the standing knee and hinge body forward at the hips.
b. Pressing buttocks back towards the wall and weight through standing leg forefoot.
c. Lift the opposite leg to the side, like a clamshell, opening and closing, keeping pelvis square with hips level.

3. Crab Walks with Band

a. Start in a squat position with a band around your ankles.
b. Keeping band taut at all times, step to the side.
c. Push the knees out while taking the steps so they don’t cave in.
d. Each step is about 50% of the starting position stance.

Try 2 – 3 sets of 12-15 repetitions to start. Doing these exercises at least three times a week is a simple way to be more stable on your feet which you will notice in your golf swing.
